Expired
Presenter: Dr Titus Mathe, SANEDI, Secretariat for the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG)
When: 18 September 2025, 4pm to 5pm
Hosted by: SAIChE

Abstract

South Africa has assumed the Presidency of the G20 since December 2024, a pivotal platform where the world’s leading economies deliberate on pressing global challenges. This moment has presented both an opportunity and a responsibility for South Africa to shape dialogue and policy directions that resonate with its developmental priorities and the African continent at large. G20 South Africa Presidency will reach its climax when the 20th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 takes place in November 2025 in South Africa, Johannesburg.

This technical webinar, led by Dr. Titus Mathe, will explore the technical and cross-sectoral implications of South Africa’s G20 leadership, with a focus on energy, water, mining and the chemical industries. These sectors form the backbone of South Africa’s socio-economic development, yet they also face structural constraints, resource vulnerabilities, and global competitiveness challenges.

Key themes to be addressed during the SAIChE Seminar include:

  • Energy – advancing just energy transitions, green hydrogen, and energy security within global decarbonisation frameworks;
  • Water – elevating water security, climate resilience, and technology partnerships in a changing hydrological landscape;
  • Chemicals and Critical Minerals – aligning South Africa’s chemical and mining sectors with global energy shifts while leveraging opportunities in green industries and circular economy models.

The discussion will highlight how South Africa’s G20 Presidency can act as a catalyst for innovation, investment, and policy coherence, ensuring that global commitments translate into local impact for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Participants will gain insights into the strategic opportunities and risks presented by South Africa’s G20 leadership, and how different sectors can align to leverage this platform for national and regional benefit.
